Is feminicide a systemic issue?

Communicating data on Feminicides
November 2023, Italy: the killing of Giulia Cecchettin has sparked public debate about femicide as a systematic issue. As often happens in Italy, news outlets and institutions have done terrible jobs of communicating the matter. I couldn't keep quiet, but at the same time I couldn't find the words, so I decided to let the data talk about the issues and I put together this Sankey graph with a bit of Python code.
I started by looking for the data in government websites. I manipulated the data in google sheets and once I had the desired stats I decided what would have been the best way of displaying the data. At this point I ask myself: "What do you want to communicate?".  Here my objective was to show how much more it is common for italian women to be killed in domestic environments compared to men. I choose I Sankey graph as I think this would have been able to walk the reader to my same conclusions in a very quick and effective visual way
In little time I had the skeleton of my sankey.
I moved to Canva for some editing and to make it readable. If I were to re-do this now, after few months and with a bit more experience if Python, I would probably try to code all of it without any post-coding editing, but I guess it will be a challenge for next project! Stay tuned!
